आवृतं ज्ञानमेतेन ज्ञानिनो नित्यवैरिणा। कामरूपेण कौन्तेय दुष्पूरेणानलेन च।।

Translation

Thus the wise living entity’s pure consciousness becomes covered by his eternal enemy in the form of lust, which is never satisfied and which burns like fire.

अनुवाद

इस प्रकार ज्ञानमय जीवात्मा की शुद्ध चेतना उसके काम रूपी नित्य शत्रु से ढकी रहती है जो कभी भी तुष्ट नहीं होता और अग्नि के समान जलता रहता है |

इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिरस्याधिष्ठानमुच्यते। एतैर्विमोहयत्येष ज्ञानमावृत्य देहिनम्।।

Translation

The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this lust. Through them lust covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him.

इन्द्रियाँ, मन तथा बुद्धि इस काम के निवासस्थान हैं | इनके द्वारा यह काम जीवात्मा के वास्तविक ज्ञान को ढक कर उसे मोहित कर लेता है |

तस्मात्त्वमिन्द्रियाण्यादौ नियम्य भरतर्षभ। पाप्मानं प्रजहि ह्येनं ज्ञानविज्ञाननाशनम्।।

Translation

Therefore, O Arjuna, best of the Bhāratas, in the very beginning curb this great symbol of sin [lust] by regulating the senses, and slay this destroyer of knowledge and self-realization.

अनुवाद

इसलिए हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ अर्जुन! प्रारम्भ में ही इन्द्रियों को वश में करके इस पाप का महान प्रतीक (काम) का दमन करो और ज्ञान तथा आत्म-साक्षात्कार के इस विनाशकर्ता का वध करो ।

इन्द्रियाणि पराण्याहुरिन्द्रियेभ्यः परं मनः। मनसस्तु परा बुद्धिर्यो बुद्धेः परतस्तु सः।।

Translation

The working senses are superior to dull matter; mind is higher than the senses; intelligence is still higher than the mind; and he [the soul] is even higher than the intelligence.

कर्मेन्द्रियाँ जड़ पदार्थ की अपेक्षा श्रेष्ठ हैं, मन इन्द्रियों से बढ़कर है, बुद्धि मन से भी उच्च है और वह (आत्मा) बुद्धि से भी बढ़कर है ।

एवं बुद्धेः परं बुद्ध्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना। जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम्।।

Translation

Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material senses, mind and intelligence, O mighty-armed Arjuna, one should steady the mind by deliberate spiritual intelligence [Kṛṣṇa consciousness] and thus – by spiritual strength – conquer this insatiable enemy known as lust.

अनुवाद

इस प्रकार हे महाबाहु अर्जुन! अपने आपको भौतिक इन्द्रियों, मन तथा बुद्धि से परे जान कर और मन को सावधान आध्यात्मिक बुद्धि (कृष्णभावनामृत) से स्थिर करके आध्यात्मिक शक्ति द्वारा इस काम-रूपी दुर्जेय शत्रु को जीतो |

श्री भगवानुवाच इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम्। विवस्वान् मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत्।।

Translation

The Personality of Godhead, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvān, and Vivasvān instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Ikṣvāku.

अनुवाद

भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा – मैंने इस अमर योगविद्या का उपदेश सूर्यदेव विवस्वान् को दिया और विवस्वान् ने मनुष्यों के पिता मनु को उपदेश दिया और मनु ने इसका उपदेश इक्ष्वाकु को दिया |

एवं परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदुः। स कालेनेह महता योगो नष्टः परन्तप।।

Translation

This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost.

अनुवाद

इस प्रकार यह परम विज्ञान गुरु-परम्परा द्वारा प्राप्त किया गया और राजर्षियों ने इसी विधि से इसे समझा | किन्तु कालक्रम में यह परम्परा छिन्न हो गई, अतः यह विज्ञान यथारूप में लुप्त हो गया लगता है |

That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend and can therefore understand the transcendental mystery of this science.

आज मेरे द्वारा वही यह प्राचीन योग यानी परमेश्र्वर के साथ अपने सम्बन्ध का विज्ञान, तुमसे कहा जा रहा है, क्योंकि तुम मेरे भक्त तथा मित्र हो, अतः तुम इस विज्ञान के दिव्य रहस्य को समझ सकते हो |

Arjuna said: The sun-god Vivasvān is senior by birth to You. How am I to understand that in the beginning You instructed this science to him?

अर्जुन ने कहा – सूर्यदेव विवस्वान् आप से पहले हो चुके (ज्येष्ठ) हैं, तो फिर मैं कैसे समझूँ कि प्रारम्भ में भी आपने उन्हें इस विद्या का उपदेश दिया था |

Translation

The Personality of Godhead said: Many, many births both you and I have passed. I can remember all of them, but you cannot, O subduer of the enemy!

अनुवाद

श्रीभगवान् ने कहा – तुम्हारे तथा मेरे अनेकानेक जन्म हो चुके हैं | मुझे तो उन सबका स्मरण है, किन्तु हे परंतप! तुम्हें उनका स्मरण नहीं रह सकता है |
